INAUGURATION OF AN ANTI-POLLUTION SYSTEM FOR EASTERN COASTLINE OF GREATER CASABLANCA

On May 13, 2015, the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, inaugurated an anti-pollution system, developed by Sogea-Maroc, for the eastern coastline of Greater Casablanca for Lyonnaise des eaux de Casablanca (Lydec). This project, launched in 2011, constitutes a considerable achievement for Greater Casablanca’s urban development process.

The eastern coastline anti-pollution system consists in two large coastal interceptors 24 km long that collects waste water from nine discharge sites and several pumping stations.
The system directly intercepts waste water discharged at locations between the port of Casablanca and the city of Mohammedia and channels it to a pre-treatment station at Sidi Bernoussi built by Sogea-Maroc. The station required 230,000 m3 of excavation down to 17 m below sea level, 1,400 tonnes of steel reinforcement, and 15,000 m3 of reinforced concrete and covers an area of 4,700 m². It will pre-treat waste water from eastern Casablanca and Mohammedia at a rate of 11 m3/s.

The system complements similar infrastructure built in the western part of the region. It is designed to protect the population and the eastern coastline in Casablanca against liquid pollution due to the discharge of waste water, particularly by industry, into the sea.
